Dear Faith Ringgold,
Recently I read "Tar Beach" to my third graders and had them create a work of art in response. We discussed many things, including who & what to bring to a rooftop picnic in the city at night and how it compared to going to the beach. We also discussed perspective, and how to create the illusion of space in a cityscape. Students began their pictures by glueing squares of magazine paper around the edges of their paper to resemble a quilt. Then they drew their picture inside, outlined it, colored it in with oil pastels, and added glitter for a touch of light. The children loved the sparkles! Here are some pictures of their artwork on display in our school-I hope you like it! :)
Thanks,
